A Case of D. D. S Induced Methemoglobinemia




Abstract
This is a case report of D. D. S induced methemoglobinemia due to the ignorance and drug-abuse of parents in a 3 years old males.
The patient was admitted to our pediatric ward with complaints of cyanosis, vomiting and irritability.
Two days before entry in our hospital, he was ingested D. D. S for the treatment of eczematous skin lesion.
On physical examination, no cardiac and pulmonary diseases were found, but cyanosis was definitely remarkable on lips, fingers and oral mucosa.
Diagnosis was made as D. D. S induced methemoglobinemia under the basis of physical findings including chocolate colored blood obtaining from peripheral blood sampling and high value of methemoglobin (2.448gm%).
He was treated with methylene blue (1 mg/kg) and ascorbic acid (500mg) intra¡þvenously. No cyanosis was occurred and the value of methemoglobin decreased to -0. llgm%. Discharged in fine condition on the 4th hospital day.
The review of literature was made briefly.
